Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about installing, using, and troubleshooting TimeSave - Video Downloader.

Installation & basics

How do I install TimeSave - Video Downloader?
Open the Chrome Web Store (or Microsoft Edge Add-ons) listing and click "Add to Chrome / Edge". Installation takes a few seconds, and there is no sign-up or account required. Once installed, the TimeSave icon appears in your browser toolbar and is ready to use immediately.
Is it free? Are there hidden charges?
Yes, TimeSave - Video Downloader is completely free. There is no paid tier, no subscription, and no usage limit. The site is supported by advertising, which lets us keep the extension free for everyone.
Which browsers are supported?
Any Chromium-based browser running version 92 or later — including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Opera. The extension uses the Manifest V3 API, which all of these browsers support.

How downloading works

How do I download a video from a page?
Open a page where a video is playing. The number badge on the TimeSave icon shows how many video addresses were detected. Click the icon, choose the video you want from the list, and press the download button. If no number appears, try playing the video or refreshing the page.
Which video formats can it download?
Three major types: HLS streaming (.m3u8), DASH streaming (.mpd), and direct files such as MP4, WebM, and MOV. HLS streams are downloaded segment-by-segment and merged into a single MP4 inside your browser.
Why does the icon show no videos?
TimeSave detects videos from the network requests a page makes. If you opened the page before installing, or the video hasn't started loading yet, no address is captured. Refresh the page or press play, and the badge should update. Some sites also load video only after you interact with the player.
What is the ffmpeg command option for?
For DASH streams, or when in-browser conversion is not possible, TimeSave generates a ready-to-use ffmpeg command. You copy it, paste it into your terminal, and ffmpeg downloads and merges the stream into an MP4 on your computer. This requires ffmpeg to be installed locally.

Data, privacy, and policy

Does TimeSave collect my data?
No. The extension does not collect, store, or transmit your personal data. Video detection, downloading, and conversion all happen locally inside your browser. For full details, see our Privacy Policy page.
Is downloading videos legal?
TimeSave is a general-purpose tool. Whether you may download a particular video depends on that site's terms of service and your local copyright laws. You are responsible for using the tool only on content you own, content that is in the public domain, or content you have explicit permission to download. Do not download copyrighted material you are not authorized to save.
Can I download from any streaming service?
No. Many platforms protect their content with DRM (digital rights management), and TimeSave does not bypass DRM or any copy protection. Such streams cannot and should not be downloaded. TimeSave is intended for ordinary, unprotected video files.

Common issues

The download stops or fails midway. What can I do?
Most failures are caused by an unstable network or the source server limiting requests. Try again, and keep the progress tab open until the download finishes. For long HLS videos, the ffmpeg command option is often more reliable than in-browser conversion.
Conversion to MP4 is slow. Is that normal?
In-browser conversion uses ffmpeg.wasm, which runs entirely on your device. Speed depends on your CPU and the video length. For very large files, copying the ffmpeg command and running it natively in a terminal is much faster.

1. The extension collects no personal data

The extension is designed to run entirely on your device. It does not collect, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information. Specifically, we do not collect:

Video detection, parallel downloading, and MP4 conversion (via ffmpeg.wasm) all happen locally inside your browser. No video data is ever sent to our servers, because the extension does not have a server that receives such data.

2. Browser permissions

The extension requests only the permissions necessary for its core function. Each is used strictly on your device:

3. The website and third-party services

The timesavevideo.com website itself uses a small number of standard third-party services. These services may collect non-personally identifiable information through cookies, as described in their own privacy policies:

For more detail, please review Google's Privacy Policy (policies.google.com/privacy) and Cloudflare's Privacy Policy (cloudflare.com/privacypolicy).

4. External CDN

When converting HLS videos, the extension loads the ffmpeg.wasm library from cdn.jsdelivr.net. This is a one-time download of a software library and does not transmit any of your personal data. No other external servers are contacted for the conversion process.

5. Information you choose to send us

If you contact us through the Feedback page, we receive only the information you actively submit — such as your message and, optionally, your email address if you want a reply. This is used solely to respond to your inquiry and is never sold or shared for marketing.

6. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension or site after changes means you accept the updated policy. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
